Umpires are encouraged to read the rule book and understand rules for the games they are assigned. Rules for baseball and softball are slightly different. Be aware of the differences before you step onto the field.
Leagues often adopt local rules to be followed in all games played for that league. It is not possible for local rules to weaken the rule book. The intent is to provide for a safer game or to account for a special local condition that is not relevant in other areas.
Little League is tightly controlling use of composite bats in the baseball division. The list of approved bats seems to change weekly if not daily. Composite bats will be disallowed during game play unless a manager can produce a Little League document authorizing use of the bat in question. An updated list is available at www.littleleague.org.
